Thanks Deitel Inc!
I am an experienced programmer from way back trying to figure out the .NET world. My list of competency includes over 30 applications including Excel VBA's and Authorware. I am in my 32nd year of teaching engineering. I purchase and read a considerable number of computer books including at least six VB.Net books. Each person has his own style. I find Deitel's book very useful and am grateful for their effort. I am intrigued by the either very positive or very negative reviews on their book. I think it speaks to the different ways people are wired to think. The book is a very example oriented learning resource that explains step-by-step every facet of well-sequenced programs. I found it most useful even though I already had a simple .NET application running on the web. The book explained very nicely the intricacies of object oriented programming that is somewhat troublesome for me. I am a very verb oriented programmer whereas .NET is a noun oriented language. That orientation may well divide the reviewers of this book. The visual layout of the book is very appealing and most likely the reason for the somewhat higher cost. However, it is well worth it. For the record, I do not know nor have I any connection with the authors other than a reader of their wonderful book.

Never disappointed me.
Visual Basic.Net How to program series by Deitel is a second book that I had been long looking for since I had bought e-business & e-commerce How to program by Deitel. I had experienced the first book written by Deitel and it has never disappointed me. Now, the second book, VB.NET is the best of all. I found the book is too useful to strengthen my knowledge and skill. With this book I could do self-study very effectively just because the book has well clearly and carefully written to present its points. If I want to compare to any other books, I feel that VB.NET by Deitel, the author is much more understand our needs in our learning process. As the result, the book offers a great deal for helping me to get good grade. I have borrowed some other books of VB.NET. As, my judgment, I found that VB.NET by Deitel is much more updated, established and experienced than any other book. I have more confident and fun to learn programming if there is a guide by Deitel's books. The book is so diverse to cover many topics and yet all written comprehensively for each topics. Yes, the book worth more than its price. Finally, it saves my time, money and energy to search for a better book of VB.NET.

A High Price for Ineffective Training Techniques
The content and organization was pretty bad (just look at the cover). It was pretty cool that the whole book was in color, but that was negated by the ineffective use of color and the author should consider not bolding so often as it makes it difficult to read. On that note, publishers should consider using Arial font versus Times Roman. It makes it easier to read when one is tired. The range of topics was good, except for the above-mentioned inadequacies, one can get real (I assume) information out of this book, though you would need to do so in a quiet room and concentrate really hard. Code samples & illustrations are where this book really shines. Since I am already familiar with programming, I can make my way through the material, but this book also has a chapter on what is a computer. At its heart, the main problem with this book is that it tries to be all things to all people. Perhaps they should have a separate book for beginners and experienced people. The author should really review the material presented in this book for ease of reading and logical flow. Often times, I don't read a technical book from beginning to end, but look for specific topics when that need arises. I do not appreciate the convoluted layout they chose for this book. After reading this book, I feel like the author just typed a bunch of things and took a lot of snapshots from their desktop and voila...a training book. I expected a lot more from a book at this price range. My advise to the potential buyer is to keep shopping and let this expensive paper weight stay on the shelf.
